A recent travel experience involving members of the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and Cebu Pacific has ignited a widespread discussion regarding airline policies for transporting fragile musical instruments.

The controversy began when MSO production manager Rona De Leon took to social media to express frustration after several orchestra members were instructed at the boarding gate to check in their violins instead of carrying them into the cabin.

The Conflict: “Fragile” vs. “Regulation”

According to the MSO, the musicians were protecting their livelihood and delicate instruments. They argued that:

  • Previous History: Musicians have successfully carried these instruments on numerous flights, both local and international, without issue.
  • Safety Concerns: The orchestra emphasized that checking in these high-value instruments poses a significant risk of damage or loss, noting that professional violins are extremely fragile.
  • The Compromise: After negotiations, the airline allowed the musicians to bring their instruments and bows into the cabin, provided the hard cases were checked in as cargo. The musicians reported having to hold their violins on their laps for the duration of the flight, which they described as uncomfortable and stressful.

Cebu Pacific’s Clarification

Cebu Pacific responded to the incident by clarifying their official baggage policy:

  • Size Limits: Instruments that fit within the standard hand-carry dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm are permitted in the cabin and count toward the passenger’s 7kg hand-carry allowance.
  • Special Baggage Program: For items exceeding these limits, the airline recommends using their CEB Special Baggage add-on, which can be purchased via the mobile app up to two hours before a flight.
  • Hard-Shell Requirement: The airline stressed that any musical instrument checked as special baggage must be in a hard-shell case. Soft cases or gig bags are not accepted for check-in as they do not provide adequate protection.
  • Alternative Solutions: If an instrument is too precious or delicate for standard check-in, Cebu Pacific suggests that passengers purchase an additional seat to secure the instrument inside the aircraft cabin.

A Lesson for Travelers

The airline reiterated that their ground team worked with the MSO members to find a practical solution, ensuring that no instruments were left behind and all passengers reached their destination.

Cebu Pacific is now urging all travelers with specialized or oversized gear—including musical instruments, sports equipment, and religious items—to review their baggage policy on the official website or app well in advance of their flight to avoid disruptions at the boarding gate.

Do you think airlines should have more flexible hand-carry rules for professional musicians and their instruments?
